Teaching computing ethics

After taking Computing, Society, and Professionalism, I taught it for four semesters: one as a TA and three as head TA. In the last, I wrote a lecture on emerging technologies.

From student to head TA.

I took the course in spring 2021 and wrote my term paper on misinformation on Twitter. From fall 2021 I was on the course staff, and head TA for three of my four semesters.

Each week I led a discussion section on that week’s topic, such as misinformation, dark patterns, or free speech. As head TA I also ran logistics, down to collecting every student’s slides for term-paper presentation day.

Who benefits, and who loses?

I wrote the Emerging Technologies lecture at the top of this page, and the professor presented it.

The thread through my research.

Teaching these topics kept me close to the questions I later studied: how platforms decide what to correct, whom to restrict, and what to tell people. The misinformation interventions study and my work on media provenance at the University of Washington came after.
